We ALL want to be dinner guests at this lady’s charming Chicago apartment!
Occupation: MBA student at University of Chicago Booth
Location: Chicago, Illinois
If you weren’t working at the job you have now, what would you want to do?
My husband says I can’t stay in business school forever, so I will start working at Bank of America Merrill Lynch when I graduate this summer.
Name your favorite five things about where you live:
- Location of our building
- We live in a converted office building originally built in 1896– so much charm!
- The bay window
- we don’t need a car! ah, so much freedom
- Living in small spaces keeps our home simple and organized
Name your least favorite five things about where you live:
- Sometimes some of that ‘charm’ isn’t so charming (read: old heating and cooling systems)
- The barking dog next door
- We are close to the financial district, so there is not as much within walking distance on the weekends
- It can take a long time to get to other parts of the city
- I am longing for a fire place…
What are the biggest challenges in your life right now?
The biggest challenge we face when it comes to food is balancing health and convenience (but, isn’t that true for everyone?!). For us, that means keeping healthy food in the house and taking the time to plan out our meals for the week. I also do my best to cook when I have time and make sure to cook enough to have leftovers. We also try to buy simple foods and aim for 5 ingredients or less in the items we buy (as advised by Michael Pollan) to ensure so we are cooking and eating whole foods. We do regularly make exceptions for ice cream.
What do your weekdays look like?
I am currently a student, which means I have a lot of flexibility during the weekdays. I spend time in class, meeting with study groups and studying. I also get to go to the gym, the grocery store, and the hairdresser in the middle of the day while everyone else is at work. Such a joy that I will miss dearly!
What do your weekends look like?
These days weekends have been filled with traveling to visit friends or hosting visitors. Other weekends I might try to get more studying done or meet up with classmates for dinner.
Tell me about your refrigerator:
Currently it is still home to our beautiful friends’ Christmas cards. I just can’t bring myself to take them off.
The inside of our refrigerator looks really different throughout the week. We shop once a week at Whole Foods and eat just about everything so that it is empty at the end of the week. It can look quite depressing and lonely in there sometimes, but this helps us plan our meals and make sure no food goes to waste.
What does your refrigerator say about you?
I like to stay organized. We also really like to host people for dinner. The beauty of being in school is that I have had more time to do that. Some weeks we might have two dinners planned so the refrigerator is really full. But, by the end of the week it’s always empty!
Name five things that are always in your refrigerator (or that would be if you could keep up):
- 1/2 and 1/2 for coffee
Name your favorite five things to eat:
- Grilled cheese
- Roasted brussels sprouts
Thank you SO much Sonja for opening up your refrigerator to us!
